In 1987, Anne of Avonlea was “poised to appear in every country that has TV sets,” (Playback, 1987). This production was the highly anticipated sequel to Anne of Green Gables (1985), from Sullivan Entertainment.
It reunited the original cast members. including Megan Follows (Anne Shirley), Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert), Jonathan Crombie (Gilbert Blythe) and Schuyler Grant (Diana Barry), and was presented through a joint venture with CBC and Disney. It was called Anne of Avonlea when it premiered in the USA on the Disney Channel.

Kevin Sullivan based the miniseries off three of L.M. Montgomery’s novels: Anne of Avonlea, Anne of The Island and Anne of Windy Poplars and says he “strove to retain the humour, warmth and imagination of Anne as she moves into a new period in her life.”
Some characters and situations from the three books were slightly altered. For example, the character of Little Elizabeth from Anne of Windy Poplars became Emmeline Harris and her strict father became Morgan Harris, an older, staid love interest for Anne. This potential romance replaced the one fans of Montgomery’s books will remember Anne having with Roy Gardner in Anne of the Island.
Since its premier as Anne of Avonlea, the film has undergone two name changes: once to Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (the name that Sullivan Entertainment released it under on DVD) for CBC and other worldwide channels, and once back to Anne of Avonlea in 2017 for all subsequent releases on Blu-Ray and for online streaming. Since both titles have been used for the second movie in the Anne of Green Gables series, they are both widely accepted. However, Anne of Avonlea is the current release name.
The film was critically acclaimed, both by the media and by viewers. The San Francisco Chronicle proclaimed, “Anne Sequel a Winner” and said, “Ultimately, Anne of Avonlea uses the power of evocation to mesmerize, creating an idyllic world that’s timeless …the miniseries wants to comply with youth’s lyrical longing to freeze time and preserve happiness.”
You can watch Anne of Avonlea on Sullivan Entertainment’s streaming platform, called GazeboTV, or you can find it on DVD or as part of a limited edition Blu-Ray set on Shop At Sullivan.

Anne Shirley, now a schoolteacher, has begun writing stories and collecting rejection slips. She makes the acquaintance of a handsome, rich, bachelor, (jumping to a wrong conclusion, she and Diana chased down Rachel Lynde's cow, thinking it was Dolly) & immediately sold it to John Blythe. When she realizes her fault, Anne & Marilla do a special visit to Rachel Lynde & her longtime husband, Thomas.
During this visit, Thomas Lynde dies & Rachel Lynde became a widow! and wins (to her chagrin) Rolling's Reliable baking soda (that was forged by Diana) company's writing contest. She acts as Diana's maid of honor, and refuses Gilbert Blythe's marriage proposal; which sends her to teach Kingsport Ladies' College, an exclusive all girl students' school, where she meets opposition from the principal, Miss Katherine Brooke, and the Pringle clan (one of whom is the rich, handsome bachelor). But while Anne won the numerous conflicts & battles, and the friends she makes, she returns to Avonlea. Quotes:Our friendship, it won't ever be the same now. Why can't he just be sensible instead of acting like a sentimental schoolboy?:Because he loves you.:He loves me? I can't know why.:Because you made Josie Pye and Ruby Gillis and all of those wishy-washy young ladies who waltzed by him look like spineless nothings.:Marilla, he's hardly my idea of a romantic suitor.:Anne, you have tricked something out of that imagination of yours that you call romance.
Have you forgotten how he gave up the Avonlea.». Alternate VersionsThe 2011 wide-screen 'Restoration Edition' DVD uses alternate, outtake footage not seen in the original 1987 film. The first 30 minute reel of 'Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel' had a very deep negative scratch in the emulsion layer of the film. This accident occurred during the creation of a 35mm theatrical negative in the early 90s, damaging the first reel beyond repair. This meant each shot in the first reel had to be completely rebuilt from a variety of sources. In some cases, each frame of the film had to be completely Photoshopped in order to repair it, particularly during sequences where action was passing across the screen. In some cases, director Kevin Sullivan determined that the damage was too significant, so scenes were reconstructed using outtakes.
Second and third takes were used. This sequel of 'Anne of Green Gables' is beautifully made if one doesn't get indignant about the fact that Kevin Sullivan has not adhered to Montgomery as he did in the first Anne series. Yes, many characters are missed and I do think that each novel in the Anne series could have been taken separately and dealt with in a way to do justice to Montgomery's work. But, all said and done, I DID like this sequel. It was visually stunning, the story unfolded well and more ever the team spirit of the entire cast which showed so well in 'Anne of Green Gables', showed here too.
Even the new actors who acted as the Harris clan and especially Rosemary Dunsmore as Katherine Brooke delivered their best. Megan Follows is as brilliant as she was in the prequel - with her perfect rendition of Anne, she has clinched a place for herself among contemporary actresses who have been so true to their literary characters example, Kellie Martin - Christy, Jennifer Ehle - Elizabeth Bennet etc. She's a truly gifted actress.
Jonanthan Crombie gets a better chance in this sequel to establish himself as the one and only Gilbert Blythe. Access 2002 runtime install download. I would recommend this sequel as another example of Kevin Sullivan's directorial mastery. Irrespective of whether or not he adheres to Montgomery, he once again envelopes us with Anne Shirley's magic. A truly Inspiring Series. Don't miss it.
