Figure 5-62 - The Stanadyne DB4 injection pump uses four opposed plungers. Need a pan of clean diesel fuel oil in which the parts can be washed and cleaned. Steps specified by the manufacture's maintenance and repair manual. So now that I've opened up the exhaust, installed gauges, worked on the intake, I'm ready to move onto playing with the injection pump.

I recently installed a Hypermax Smoke Puff Limiter, and now I need to tune the DB2 to take better advantage of tying the fuel curve to the boost level. For that I need a better understanding of how the pump actually works, and how it is adjusted/tuned.
I'm not looking for help turning up the fuel, more of a manual from Stanadyne on how the pump is adjusted on a flow bench (ideal), or an explaination of how the fuel curves, max/min settings are adjusted. SO, anyone have a line on this type of thing?
Google has failed me.Ok what little info they give describing it does it do anything you can't do with your right foot. How do you like it and have you noticed any gains with it.Well, I've had it installed for about a week. It is very clear that to properly tune the pump with it installed, a flow bench would be VERY helpful. I don't have a flow bench, nor do I have the knowledge of how to properly tune the DB2 if I did have a flow bench. While I suppose you could match much of the Smoke Puff Limiter (SPL) functionality with throttle adjustments, the goal behind it is to help pass the snap emission test that many states require diesel trucks to take. You could just turn down the fuel for the test.
I don't want to do that, nor is simply passing the snap acceleration test my only goal for installing the SPL, or even my primary goal.My goals for the device are to tie the fuel curve to the boost provided by the turbo. Tying the boost to the fuel curve will allow significantly increasing the fuel flow at high boost events, without over fueling in low/no boost events.
So far, the device does this. Over fueling in low boost/no boost events leads to high EGT, and I don't want to burn a piston when I let my father-in-law or my wife drive the truck.
I am looking for more finite control over the operation/adjustment of the DB2, hence the quest for documentation. Never heard of such a thing before.
Its funny what they called it too.VW had that on their 1.6L turbo diesels. Sometimes known as an aneroid style pump I think. The basic idea is to have the pump set like normal, but increase the fueling dynamically when under boost. Not the same as pushing more or less with your foot.
This is essence turns up the fuel when the turbo is working, but turns it back down when idling so its not blowing smoke when you don't need it. Should give better efficiency/power then just turning up the fuel.
Do any of you guys who really get into the older diesels ever have a light bulb come on and realize that all the sensors and the computer on the powerstrokes and later diesels do exactly what you are trying to do with old technology and a bunch of fiddling with old timey fuel injection pumps?I know we all hate computers in this forum, but the factory realized they would never be able to control the fuel like they wanted and still keep the mechanical injection pump. I am not up on the later diesel stuff myself, but I do know you can buy aftermarket fuel injection systems for gasoline engines, and a aftermarket electronic universal system for a diesel would be a hot seller if they don't already make one. Our Diesel ranger has a fuel aneroid as well and its a wonderful device.
The Bosch VE rotary pumps were designed from factory to accomodate them in certain applications. It makes the engine burn clean, and also makes it idiot proof so its no longer possible to overfuel the engine at low RPM while coking the rings, driving EGTs and other stuff that should generally be avoided. It will not to my knowledge increase peak fuel flow, but it will lock out full flow until there is enough boost pressure to burn it all. Edwin louis cole pdf files. In other words, you can hold it to the floor off idle, and the fuel delivery map will automatically adjust to increase with turbo boost instead of simply blowing most of the fuel out the tailpipe until it can be all burned. If some one else drives your truck (rare among this crowd, I know!) its a good feature to have.
As for info on the web, there is some to be found, but probably won't be enough. I found some other stuff over the years and will post as I find them. Frankly, I think it is super cool technology. I bought an IDI because it was cheaper to run, and tuning a mechanical truck is a challenge for me.
