Velaikaran (transl. Man servant) is a 1987 Indian Tamil-languageaction comedy film directed by S. P. Muthuraman, starring Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu and Amala. This film is a remake of the 1982 Hindi film Namak Halaal.^[1] The film was released on 7 March 1987 and became a box office success. This is one other kollywood movie shot in Kashmir. One Song and fight scene from the movie has been shot in Kashmir.

Plot[edit]

Ragupathy (Rajinikanth) was brought up by his paternal grandfather, Valayapathy (V.K.Ramasamy). He decided to go to the city in search of a new job and life. In the city he meets Senthil, who guides him into an interview in a 5-star hotel owned by Rajkumar (Sarath Babu). While in the hotel, Ragupathy meets Kowsalya, (Amala) and falls in love with her. During this time, many attempts are made to kill Rajkumar by his uncle and son Nassar. The blame for this murder attaches to Rajkumar's mother (K. R. Vijaya), who is actually Ragupathy's mother. Realizing all this, Ragupathy takes an oath that he will not let harm come to Rajkumar.

Release and reception[edit]

Velaikkaran was released on 7 March 1987.^[4]The Indian Express called it 'pretty run of the mill stuff'.^[5] The film became a box office success.^[6] For his performance, Rajinikanth won the Sunflash Award for Best Actor.^[7]

However, the second half gets a little superficial and preachy.The message part in the film also stands out and the element of socialism works to the film's advantage. The art work by Muthuraj looks unbleached and adds value to the script. Not an easy deal to recreate a slum set like the way he has done.Ramji’s visuals provide the much-needed grandeur to a message-oriented script as such. The slum scenes have a natural and lively treatment, while the song sequences are a treat to the eyes. Anirudh deserves a round of applause for consistently giving chart buster tracks and helping the film gain hype before release.

Karuthavanlaam Galeejaam is one of the most popular tracks of the year and with the visuals, Ezhu Velaikkara could well climb up the charts. Unlike some other Anirudh films, the BGM here is not overpowering and suits the mood of the film. Two romantic numbers are, however positioned as a mere formality.
